While the spring semester may be wrapping up for most, Beakwater isn’t. Just like the Triple Crown, we’ve still got two more races (uh, readings) to go.
So go refill that julep, take that big floppy hat back off the rack, pull out those long summer dresses, flip flops, and short-sleeved flannel shirts and come join us this Friday, May 16 at the Brookline Booksmith in Coolidge Corner for a pre-Preakness reading from some serious contenders.

Sonam Wangmo Jhalani is originally from Bhutan. She is in Boston University’s MFA program for Fiction Writing. She has an MA in International Relations from the University of Denver. She has lived in Africa, India and New York. She has also traveled to Sri Lanka, Thailand and Afghanistan for work. Currently she is working on a collection of short stories.
Karen Locascio graduates this semester from UMass Boston, with an MFA in Poetry. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in Spry Literary Journal, Cider Press Review, Amethyst Arsenic, and Breakwater Review, among others. While at UMass Boston, she was co-winner of the 2014 Academy of American Poets Prize, received an honorable mention for the 2013 Academy of American Poets Prize, and was recently awarded a scholarship to attend the NY Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore College this July. Karen is proudly originally from New Jersey, and no, she doesn’t know what she’s doing after graduation.
Peter Medeiros is entering his third year in the Emerson College MFA program, studying fiction. Most recently, his short fiction was accepted to the July issue of Outposts of Beyond. He enjoys strange stories, overly complex board games, and kung fu in the park.
Jennifer Murphy While pursuing her B.A. in Creative Writing at Arizona State, Murphy received an honorable mention in the fiction genre from the Glendon & Kathryn Swarthout Awards in Writing as well as first prize for her scholarly essay and runner up in fiction for the Randel and Susan McCraw Helms Writing Contest. Murphy has had internships with the literary journal Hayden’s Ferry Review as well as the Piper Center for Creative Writing, and participated in the Desert Nights, Rising Stars Writers Conference. She is currently an MFA candidate at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. She will be workshopping with Ellisa Schappell over the summer at the Tin House Summer Writers Workshop. Her list of favorite things includes catching rattlesnakes, the smell of a hot car, ancient astronaut theory, and all things denim.
Johanna Pittman is an MFA candidate in poetry at Boston University. Her poetry has appeared in Memorious, Jabberwock Review, and Middle Gray.
David Weinstein hails proudly from New Jersey. He is a nonfiction MFA candidate at Emerson College and an editorial assistant at Ploughshares. His work has appeared in Slate, among other publications. Yes, he is proud of being from New Jersey.
The Breakwater Reading Series features Boston’s student writers performing the best in poetry, fiction, and nonfiction from the programs at Boston University, Emerson College, and the University of Massachusetts-Boston. Six fresh voices read in each installment of this popular series, presented by the Graduate Writing Department at UMass-Boston. Readings are held at the Brookline Booksmith at 7pm on the third Friday of every month between September and June. The event is always free and open to the public.
